This information will help you to make a better decision and pick the right design for your dream ring.
Almost all diamond rings have the same anatomy and the same parts. Here is a simple breakdown of ring anatomy.
Shank
This is the technical term for the actual band of metal that encircles the finger. The shank can have diamonds or just be solid metal.
Head
This is the part of the ring that holds the center stone in place.
Center Stone
Shoulder
The top two sides of the ring.
Side stones
Smaller gems or diamonds are on the sides of the center stone.
Prong
These are the small metal pieces that hold the gemstone in place. Solitaire diamonds often have 4 to 6 prongs. The more prongs you have, the more secure your stone is.
A solitaire ring features only one single diamond in the center. Solitaires are the most classic and iconic style of engagement ring. Due to their simplicity they have a timeless look that go perfectly with enhancer rings and wedding bands. Solitaires come in varied band sizes and styles, mostly with four or six prongs stetting.
A halo ring style features a center ring surrounded by a circle of smaller diamonds. The halo maximizes the visual impact of the center diamond and makes it look brighter and bigger. This is a very popular and modern ring style. Halo rings come in all shapes of the center diamonds. Some of the most popular shapes for a halo ring include round-cut, asscher-cut, and pear-cut. For colored gem center stones like blue sapphires and red rubies, a diamond halo is the most popular choice
A double halo refers to a ring in which the center diamond is surrounded by two halos to make the ring sparkle and provide more protection for the center ring.
A three-stone ring style refers to a ring with a center diamond flanked by two side diamonds which are mostly smaller than the center one. The center diamond is usually set at a higher level to add some depth to the ring. When it comes to choosing the diamond shape for a three-stone ring, brilliant and princess-cut are the most popular shapes.
The ring's band is straight and doesn’t taper off or split. These simple lines of the shank make this a classic option for someone who prefers a timeless ring. Straight ring shanks are most commonly flat-edged means that the edges of the ring shank are not rounded off. Instead, they’re formed with a rectangular strip of metal. When the edges of a ring shank are rounded off, it is often referred to as a ‘comfort fit, as it more naturally fits the circumference of the finger.
A twisted ring is a trendy style which gives the ring a unique look. In this setting, the metal band is twisted and turned to give the claws or shoulders of the ring a sweeping effect.
A split shank ring refers to a ring with a band that beautifully divides as it reaches the center of the ring. The strands of a split shank ring are often separated by space or can be interwoven. There is a visible gap between the band and the center diamond which can result in a bigger look of the ring.
A knife edge ring refers to a ring in which the crown is set on a shank that is flat on the inner side, but v-shaped on the outer surface of the ring.
