Ranging from Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat and not to forget Shape, we have provided the below guide to diamonds in hopes of helping you kickstart your custom creation process.
There is often a misconception about the carat of a diamond, commonly misunderstood to be speaking of its size. The carat of a diamond actually refers to the weight of a diamond. However, when looking at a diamond's carat, it is also important to refer to how well it is cut. A diamond that has a poor cut grade but a high carat weight will appear smaller than a diamond with a higher cut grade with the same carat weight due to the fact that the cut of the diamond is ill-proportioned.
White diamonds are graded on a scale ranging from colorless to pale yellow. Falling on the color scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow), the certified color of a diamond is the 2nd most important factor that will affect the overall look of the fine diamond jewelry and the price. Given its rarity, diamonds that exhibit less color or fall closer to the colorless grade will also be more expensive.
The clarity of a diamond is the assessment of any surface blemishes or internal inclusions it may contain. All diamonds are imperfect and blemishes or inclusions contained in a diamond are part of nature. They are mostly microscopic or unnoticeable to the untrained eye. The clarity grading system of diamonds is:
FL (Flawless) and IF (Internally Flawless): representing the rarest of diamonds where inclusions are not visible even at or under 10 times the magnification,
VVS1 and VVS2: an excellent grade where inclusions are difficult to detect under the microscope even for the trained eye,
VS1 and VS2: Minor inclusions may be visible at 10 times the magnification,
SI1 and SI2: inclusions are noticeable under 10 times the magnification and in some cases for SI1s where inclusions may sometimes be visible to the naked eye,
I1: Minor inclusions may be visible to the naked eye,
I2 and I3: inclusions may be more apparent and may be visible to the naked eye.
Ranging from Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair to Poor, the cut of a diamond is the grading on its optimization in reflecting light, which equals sparkle. Out of the 4Cs of diamond certification, the cut of a diamond is the most important factor influencing the brilliance and sparkle of a diamond. When judging the cut of a diamond, you are looking at its Brilliance, the way it reflects white light, its Fire, its ability to disperse light into colors of the rainbow, and its Scintillation, which is how it contrasts light and dark to create sparkle. Not to be confused with the shape of a diamond, the cut of a diamond refers to its overall dimensions and proportions. It also refers to how its facets are positioned, its symmetry, and how well it is polished. All of these combination factors play a big role in influencing a diamond's ability to exhibit sparkle.
